Garage door opener repair
When an opener misbehaves, the cause isn't always the opener. Safety sensors, a tripped outlet, a dead remote battery or a door that's out of balance can all look like a motor problem. A few quick checks can save you a visit.

Opener stopped working
Motor hums but nothing moves, remotes stopped responding, or the opener light is flashing. Some causes are simple checks; others need a repair.

Quick checks before you call
Only do what's comfortable and safe. Never reach into moving parts.
- 01
Look at the sensors
The small units near the floor on each side need a clear line of sight. Wipe the lenses and check that nothing blocks them.
- 02
Check power
Make sure the opener is plugged in and the outlet works. A GFCI outlet in the garage may have tripped.
- 03
Try the wall button
If the wall button works but the remote doesn't, the remote battery or programming is the likely cause.
- 04
Check the lock
Some wall consoles have a lock or vacation mode that disables remotes.
In detail
Common opener faults
Hums but won't move
Often a stripped drive gear, a failed capacitor, or the door itself is too heavy because of a spring problem.
Reverses before closing
Usually sensor alignment or force settings. Occasionally an obstruction in the track.
Runs, door doesn't
The trolley may be disconnected from the carriage, or the drive belt/chain has slipped or broken.
Works intermittently
Wiring to the sensors or wall button can loosen or get damaged over time.

Repair or new opener?
Many faults — sensors, gears, logic boards, remotes — are repairable. Replacement may make more sense on older units without modern safety reversing, or where parts are unavailable. We'll explain the options before any work starts.

Questions
Garage Door Opener Repair questions
Why does my door go down and then back up?
The safety reversing system thinks something is in the way. Misaligned or dirty sensors are the most common reason.
Can you program new remotes or keypads?
Yes, for most compatible openers. Bring us the make and model if you know it.
Do you install new openers?
Yes. See our installation & replacement page for what that involves.
